Vittoria Gerardi
b. 1996
About
The state of latency and the memory trace contained within photography lie at the heart of Vittoria Gerardi’s artistic exploration: to reveal the boundary between the visible and the invisible, to reject any representation of reality imprinted on the negative in order to better reveal its essence. It was Death Valley, in the United States, that inspired her first series, Confine. The elements of light and time at the origin of this experience are translated into a selection of photographic fragments of the desert, contained within space by lines and other symbolic forms.
Vittoria continues her exploration, with trace, time, and memory once again becoming the raw material in her series on the ruins of Pompeii. She chooses to fix the memory of the city by veiling her photographs with plaster and submerging others in pristine sculptures, leaving only a tiny part visible.
With her latest project entitled Latenza, Vittoria seeks to understand the language of photography—its submerged structure, its hidden side—and thus shed light on its connection to nature. In doing so, she explores the concept of the latent image that exists within every print before it is even revealed.
Vittoria Gerardi’s work has been widely acclaimed by private collectors and public institutions. In 2021, the Marta Herford Museum in Germany presented an extensive selection of works from her first two series. Born in Venice in 1996, Vittoria studied in New York and London. She now lives between Padua and Paris.
